Since June 2012 the energy management system of C.D. Wälzholz GmbH is certified according to the international ISO 50001 standard. Thus Wälzholz is the first company in the cold rolling sector to be inspected and certified according to this new standard.
»Energy efficiency has always been an important issue for us, but we increasingly focus on the responsible use of raw materials and on environmental protection,« Dr. Gregor van Kampen, energy manager and leader of the energy team, says. »Of course, it is also about reducing energy expenditure, which is a large cost factor along with costs for pre-material and personnel.« Therefore C.D. Wälzholz did not wait for new requirements with regard to more energy efficiency to become legally compulsory, but introduced an energy management system in the last few years to reduce previous CO2 emission levels and to increase competitiveness by using energy sources more efficiently. »For an increasing number of our customers environmentally friendly production processes are of vital importance.«
»First of all, we need transparency,« Dr. van Kampen says. One step was to optimize the structure of the energy meter system to be able to systematically measure and evaluate the important consumers of energy sources – mainly gas and electricity. Energy teams at the different locations continuously assess and develop possibilities to increase energy efficiency. Energy saving targets are annually defined, and they are regularly examined by independent environment experts.
Climate protection goals and energy strategies for an environmentally friendly and reliable energy supply that have been stipulated by the government are an enormous challenge for a power-intensive company like C.D. Wälzholz. The latest amendments of energy and electricity tax legislation adopted by the German government places large demands on companies with regard to verifiable energy savings and increases in energy efficiency in return for tax reductions.
